So exactly what are Energy Efficient Windows? They are windows that help to contain and conserve heat within the home keeping out wind and rain, resisting condensation and yet allowing natural “free” energy – the warmth of the sun – to heat the home. They can be made using any frame material – aluminium, PVC-U, steel or timber or even a combination of materials.

The BFRC Scheme is the UK’s national system for rating the energy efficiency of windows and is recognised within the Building Regulations as a method to show compliance for your replacement windows installation.Window Energy Ratings use a consumer-friendly traffic-light style AE ratings guide similar to that used on ‘white’ goods (such as fridges, freezers, washing machines etc…).This ratings label can be used by you to make more informed choices about the energy efficiency of the windows you are looking to purchase.With carbon emissions high on the global agenda and the current high cost of fuel, we are all looking for ways to make our homes more energy efficient.Each window rated by the BFRC has a unique label. This label will display the following information:1.The rating level – A, B, C, etc…

2.The energy rating eg. -3kWh/(m².K) in this example the product will lose 3 kilowatt hours per square metre per year.
3.The window U value eg. 1.4W/(m².K)
4.The effective heat loss due to air penetration as L e. g. 0.01 W/(m².K)
5.The solar heat gain eg. g=0.43

Simply put this will determine how well a product will perform the functions of:* Helping you contain and conserve heat within your building in the winter
* Keep out the wind
* Resist condensation
* Contribute to improved sound insulation

What are the component parts of the glazing unit:Thickness – 4.1 4-16-4
This details two panes of glass of nominal thickness of 4mm separated by a 16mm gap or a 20mm gap.Gas Fill – Argon 90% Air 10%
This is the gaseous mixture which is pumped into the void between the two outer panes of glass. This is effectively gas insulation Low Enissivity
Low emissivity glass products have a transparent metallic coating that reflects heat from radiators or fires back into the room rather than allowing it to escape through the windows. At the same time it allows free heat and light from the sun (known as passive solar heat gain) to pass through the glass, warming your home and further contributing to the energy efficiency of your windows Low Iron This is glass with a low iron content. It is an extra clear glass which is valued for its attractive appearance and optical qualities. The low iron content produces a higher light transmittance and a reduced green tint inherent of other glasses Float Glazing Unit

This is a multipurpose clear glass. It is available in a wide range of thicknesses. It is the base green glass which can be processed into insulated, laminated, toughened etc glass for a wide range of applications.Warm Edge spacer

A warm edge spacer is a thermally –improved, or warm-edge, spacer bar for insulating glazing, it is the divider between the two panes of glass which is then sealed to retain the gas. It is manufactured from special fibreglass, composite material. Warm Edge space is available in two versions:The composite material can be covered by an ultra thin foil of aluminium.
Can have extremely thin stainless steel foil for maximal possible insulation.

The Warm Edge Spacer has a very low level of thermal conductivity. This high thermal performance enables:

Reduce energy consumption –bringing you a better Uw value for your whole window (from 0.1W/mK up to 0.3W/mK)
Reduce condensation for the inside pane – your inside pane temperature could be improved 30C to 40C
Reduce maintenance costs – fewer mould problems

These metallic foils guarantee the gas tightness and excellent sealant adhesion

Aluminium spacer bar
This is a spacer bar which has been standard thoughout the industry. It serves the purpose of separating the two panes and achieves the minimum requirements for a C Rating unit

Polyurethane secondary seal
The spacer bar provides the initial seal between the panes of glass and keeps the gas in place. The polyurethane is a rubber compound which is applied around the edge of the unit to ensure an air/gas tight seal
